Omavi Dynasty (661 - 750) founded by Moawiyeh, who triumphed over Mohammad's descendants moved his capital from Madina to Damascus. Under Abdolmalek (685 - 705), their realm extended from India to Spain until defeated by the Byzantine Empire in 717. Omavi Caliphs were finally unseated by the Abbasi Dynasty. The Omavi Caliphate; "Sons of Umayyah" was the second of the four major Arab caliphates established after the death of Prophet Mohammad. It was ruled by the Omavi dynasty, whose name derives from Umayya ibn Abd Shams, the great-grandfather of the first Omavi caliph. Although the Omavi family originally came from the city of Mecca, their capital was Damascus. At its greatest extent, it covered more than 13,000,000 square Kilometers making it one of the largest empires the world had yet seen, and the fifth largest contiguous empire ever to exist. After the Omavi Caliphs were overthrown by the Abbasid Caliphate, they fled across North Africa to Spain (Al-Andalus), where they established the Caliphate of Córdoba, which lasted until 1031.
