InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is a brand of luxury hotels. Founded in 1946 by Pan American World Airways under Juan Trippe, it is now owned by the InterContinental Hotels Group. The chain operates over 183 hotels and resorts in more than 60 nations.

InterContinental Hotel began on April 4, 1946, when the first hotel opened in Belém, Brazil, to accommodate Pan American World Airways crews and passengers in destinations where 5-star hotels were not yet present. The number of hotels grew with the development of the airline''s routes, in South America and the Caribbean first, then reaching Europe, the Middle-East, and Asia. Following the strategy of its parent company, which development was predominantly based upon its international flights, InterContinental Hotels opened gradually outside of the US before entering the country as late as 1975 with the landmark InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel.

In 1981, holding company InterContinental Hotels Corporation was sold to UK-based company Grand Metropolitan. As GrandMet focused its core business, ICH was sold in 1988 to Japanese based Saison Group. In 1998, Bass Brewery acquired ICH.

Bass was itself split in two, its brewing assets being sold to Interbrew whilst the remaining part of the company became Six Continents PLC, focusing on hotel, restaurant and beverages business. When the company split itself in two, IHG was created in 2003 and today retains the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand as part of its portfolio, along with midscale Holiday Inn and upscale Crowne Plaza.

Interestingly, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts now operates a rather evenly located portfolio, with 37 properties in North America, compared to 31 in Europe, 29 in the Middle East, 19 in Latin America and 51 in Asia Pacific.

InterContinental hotels became the target of an international boycott campaign in May 2013, over parent company International Hotels Group''s plan to operate an Intercontinental-brand luxury hotel in Lhasa, Tibet. According to campaigners from the Free Tibet campaign, the hotel was a "PR coup for the Chinese government". IHG responded that "IHG''s hotels create jobs and drive tourism income in the communities where they operate, thereby helping to increase living standards in Lhasa and wider Tibet."

On 30 November 2013 at the World Travel Awards in the La Cigale Hotel in Doha, Qatar, the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts won the category for "World''s Leading Hotel Brand 2013".
