Ferdowsi died in 1020 at the age of 85 and because of his faith zealots did not admit him to the cemetery. Thus he was buried at the yard of his own garden in Toos, where a mausoleum was built and destroyed several times. Ferdowsi was well ahead of his time and his soil became a sacred place for people who understood him in time. The first Mausoleum was built by Arslan Jazeb (Sepahdar Toos) right after his death.Around a hundred years after his death, Nezami Arouzi narrated visiting his mausoleum. 600 years later, it was visited by Ghazi Abidollah Shushtari after the monument was destroyed by Uzbek Abid Khan. In 1303 LH, Mirza Abdolvahab Khan Shirazi (Asefoddoleh) built a new brick building which was gradually turning into ruins until a new construction started in 1925. The building was completed in ten years only by donations. After that, it was rebuilt and renovated a couple of times.Ferdowsi Mausoleum is visited by around 1,000,000 people every year.
