Demonstrations Against Prime Minister

By: Mir M.Hosseini

Public demonstrations against Vosooghoddoleh, the Prime Minister took place in Baharestan sq. in Tehran. The demonstrators clashed with the police. These demonstrations had started in Kerman and Fars provinces 40 days before after Vosooghoddoleh ratified a request by the British to create an army unit called SPR in Iran. Based on a colony model similar to India, SPR consisted from local soldiers under the authority of British officers. Vosooghoddoleh, who was reportedly bribed by the British, had finally passed the law on March 21st despite general public opposition .
Last Qajar kings were mostly incompetent puppet rulers who created a corrupt administrative system that has not been changed ever since even after coups and revolutions.
Vosooghoddoleh was forced to resign and Alaossaltaneh became the new Prime Minister on May, 29, 1917.
