U.S. Department of Justice announces finding memo in Colonel Oliver North's office that proves money transfer of $12 million to Nicaragua contra guerillas from arms sale to Iran. Caspar Weinberger, former defence secretary was pardonned by President Bush I before his case known as Irangate scandal came to trial.
The political scandal, later became known as Iran Contra Affair; in 1985 U.S. secretly authorized sales of weapons worth $48 million dollars to Iran in an attempt to secure the release of U.S. hostages in Lebanon held by Hezbollah. Part of the money from the sales was diverted to Nicaraguan contras.
