Nader Shah's Birthday

By: Mir M.Hosseini

Nader Shah the great Iranian commander was born on Aug, 6, 1698 in Dastgerd of Khorasan province. He soon discovered a peculiar genius for military exercises: even at the early age of fifteen. It was in the 36 year of his age, that he formed the design of delivering his country from the tyrants by collecting under his banners a number of the tribes contiguous to his own, and persecuted or destroyed all those, who refused to support him in his enterprise.
His success accelerated when he joined forces with the Sultan Tahmasp against a usurper named Melek in Khorasan. During his 59 years of reign Iran extended some of its border to where they were in Sassanid era. He forced the Ottomans out of Kafkas and Armenia and captured Karbala and Najaf. He could also seize Delhi and pushed Russians back and enforced Iranian borders at Daghestan. According to many historians, he was the last great chieftain of the east. Nader and his mother became enslaved when he was a child by Uzbeks when they seized Khorasan. After his mother's death, he escaped captivity and found refugee with the Afshar tribe; that's how he got the Afshar name though he was not from their tribe. He was killed during a coup against him by some of his officers.
According to other sources, Nader Shah was born on Nov, 22, 1688.
